Please excuse this poorly written blog! I wrote this in one go, with no editing.

BACKYARD
This year's backyard is not as good as I hoped it would be. There have been some notable changes. Last winter I moved two dwarf cherry trees to the back of the garden. They are small enough that they were not damaged too much. When spring rolled around the trees blossomed.

DAISY CORNER
I neglected to properly weed and mulch the garden over the winter, as a result the garden beds were smothered in weeds. I tried weeding as much of is as I could myself. When I gave up I hired my babysitters brother to weed the area for me.

I decided that I wanted to put some colorful perennial flowers in that area, heavily mulched to prevent this problem from arising again. I chose a selection of yellow and white daises. As flowering plants look better in groups we have Shasta, yellow cone and Black eyed Susan daises growing in groups. I also transplanted some salvia and a few other varieties.
HERBS

For the vegetable garden I planted potatoes, one of my favorite garden staples. They really are delicious when cooked straight out of the earth. This year I planted a variety of herbs: basil, oregano, cilantro, rosemary, thyme etc... Considering all thing things I grow, herbs are the most used in my kitchen. For the last few days I've been going into the garden harvesting rosemary and cilantro for
chicken, fish, beef, stews and even breads.

FRUIT TREES
The plumb and Nadia trees are growing nicely. This year I pruned them back on the tips. They flowered in the Spring.

The pear trees have little baby pears growing on them, and the leaves have yellow/orange spots. The spots are a rust caused by rust fungus Gymnosporangium sabinae. I have to buy some copper fungicide from either Amazon or Carpinitos. I really need to get a small shed for the backyard, the garage just isn't a good place to store garden supplies.

The espalier apple trees are growing beautifully. Its been five years and not a single apple, but that is okay as espalier trees usually take much longer to produce fruit than if I let the tree grow on its own accord.

PERENNIAL BOARDERS
I planted Canna bulbs - not a single one grew. However one tiny rose bush I planted from carpinitos is blooming nicely. This brings my to my roses. I really do not like the tea roses. The grow all weird and scraggly. I think tea roses are good for cutting, but for the backyard I need floribunda or some other variety. I love roses, but they just do not look great to me. I think I need more patience. What I really want is about 3 Burgundy Iceberg Roses in the backyard. They would compliment the Myrtle Gentry and Bernheart Peonies. Im still looking for the Hotel Savoy Rose bushes, I think I will not ever get them unless I go to England, buy them there and ship them home. The English growers will not ship them to the United States. My co-worker told me there is somebody who sells roses at the Puyallup Street Fair and they always do well. Unfortunately I am in California during the market. If its still going on when I get home I am going to check it out.

The lawn looks like crap. I like a little lawn, but for the most part it is a waste of space and time. I'm going to keep the lawn only as a little walking space. The kids do not care about the backyard, the area is just my playground.

PERENNIAL PEONY BLEEDING HEART BOARDER

The first peony next to espalier apple is myrtle gentry, it bloomed beautifully this year. The problem is that it is planted too close to the apple tree. Peonies like to stay put, but it won't die if it is moved, they last up to fifty years. I would like to move the myrtle gentry to the new perennial boarder right behind the small rose. I have a few other peonies that need to be planted so I will replace the old one with the newer ones to give them a chance. The bleeding heart grew magnificently, I have two more to be planted. Again - I like repetition. As bleeding hearts are so big they do not need to be planted in groups, one will suffice.

HORRIBLE CONCRETE
One more thing on my to do list is to hire a contractor to remove all that horrible concrete. The previous owners layed down concrete and it looks awful. I want to remove the concrete, put down fresh soil and rework the garden. I will probably put the vegetable gardens closer to the house.

This puts into question - what do I plant where we had the vegetable gardens? Five years of digging, removing rocks, amending, and bags of compost made the soil perfect. As I already have three posts up for the raspberries and wine grapes, the answer is simple - blueberries.

BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries need more than one variety for good pollination. The bushes need space to really grow out, I think I can put in no more than four blueberry bushes, three varieties would be good for pollination. As the garden beds are fairly large for blueberry alone I will have to find companion plants. I thought about strawberries but the look like crap and the bugs eat them anyway. Probably some lovely low growing flowers would work in that spot. I do not like wasting space. Rhododendron, like blueberries prefer acidic soil, they would be a good companion plant for blueberries. The problem is there is a competition for space. Rhodies can get quite large. Basil does like slightly acidic soil - boy do they smell wonderful. The problem is that in our climate they need to be planted every summer.

My final thought is about one of my favorite trees, Cedar of Lebanon. Trees of Joy sell them - and they are not cheap. It is an endangered tree and very hard to get. Although it is a slow grower, I simply do not have room for it in my yard.

The lavender is very beautiful and huge! When I stepped outside I was overwhelmed with the scent of lavender. It feels like I am in France again. But the lavender is getting too big for the area and will have to be moved to a new home.

There is so much work to do I do not know where to begin.

FRONT YARD

It is time for me to dismantle the stones for the garden bed under the tree. I find that area just does not get enough rain for vegetation. The tulips all look good there, I think it is time to remove the stones and take them to the backyard. I am going to rework that entire area.

Another thing on my to-do list is to dig a trench along the area where I have the boxwood hedge in the front yard. Behind the boxwood hedge I will transplant the lavender. Let me say this - kids stopped riding their bikes across my front lawn.

After I move the lavender from the back to front, this frees up space in the backyard for more hedge experiments.

Geometric spacers are the outlines for three new garden beds.

Final notes: fence in the backyard needs to be painted. I really hate the look of the ugly cheap wood. Also, typar tree circles protect the trunk and base from being absorbed by weeds. A well learned lesson for me this season.
After checking out five books from the King County Library on Peonies, I finally jumped in and made my purchase! I ordered four Myrtle Gentry Peony tubers from Eden Brothers. The shallow holes are dug. According to all the Youtube videos I've been watching, we are not supposed to cover the tubers with more than 2 inches of soil. I plan on making another trip to Carpinito Brothers to purchase a couple tea rose bushes to plant with the Myrtle Gentry.

My philosophy about flowering plants, is that the plants must be seed in groups. The effect of 3 or 4 plants together is a lot more stunning than looking at a single plant all by itself.

Yes, that is me and my husband. This is our first time growing wine. Our favorite is Shiraz, but unfortunately it doesn't grow in our region.

I read Pino Noir is a fickle plant, it doesn't like a lot of sun (WIN)...I live in Washington State. I grows well in poor soil with good drainage.

The wine is a year or so out, we are still learning the process. Right now my only concern is growing the grapes.

Other than that, we brainstormed label ideas.
Aloha Kona Dark Red Calibrachoa is blanketed in stunning dark red trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throats at the ends of the stems from late spring to early fall. Aloha Kona Dark Red Calibrachoa is a dense herbaceous annual with a trailing habit of growth, eventually spilling over the edges of hanging baskets and containers. If so, and the root isn't patented...could I in theory use them to graft more cherry trees?

This was a cherry tree that went awry. I never should have potted it.

Today I got a lot of work done on my garden. Last year I made many mistakes, hopefully this year I've corrected many of them. First, I moved a red rose bush to a sunnier location. Last year I noticed that my gladiolus kept flopping over, giving the garden bed an untidy look. This year I planted eight Sugar Plum gladiolus in two large containers, this will keep them a little more upright and make it easier for me to stake them. I also planted six Salmon Star Oriental Hybrid Lilies also in a container. In the pink rose garden I also have 5 Sarah Bernheart Peonies and one Myrtle Gentry Peony from last year. This year I combined them with four Wizard of Oz Dahlia Balls also in a lovely shade of pink. At the end of the perennial garden, near a more shad part, I planted to bleeding heart bushes. At the very corner I wanted to plant one elephant ear and a few more hostas. I realized I didn't have any elephant ears, but I did have my hostas. Unfortunately, there are still some tulips blooming in that area. I want to wait until I have the elephant ear before planting the hostas at the very end. The roses are called "Touch of Class" and they are a tea rose. One of them I planted up on the mound because I reasoned it was not going to get enough light for the growing season. One the mound I planted some Show N Tell Dinnerplate Dahlias along with ThomasEdison Dinner Plate Dahlias. In one pot I planted one white hymenocallis bulb, surrounding it with an Azalia seed mix. I used the same Northwest Azalia seed mix last year and they turned out absolutely stunning.

Over the spring, I planted a boxwood shrub around my fruit trees. Hidden behind them are about eight hostas. In the middle of the fruit trees are the wonderful white South African calla lilies. These lilies come from the Western part of South Africa, which means they are shade and water tolerant. They are also very popular among wedding boquets. I only wish I had more of them.

We will see how things turn out this year. I've never been a fan of pots, but if I can hide them well and they hold up the tall flowers much better, they maybe they are a keeper.

As you know, I love planting multi-grapht espalier fruit trees in my backyard. I plant them first and foremost to produce the kind of fruit our family likes to eat. If one is not interested in growing a certain fruit, or baking with it - I suggest growing something else.

My backyard currently has six trees, including a special Nadia cherry/plumb hybrid. I have a four graft pear tree growing in another part of my years. Graphing, cloning and cross breeding stone fruit trees have far-reaching implications for my tree sculptures, such as biodiversity, food culture, and most importantly the symbiosis of human kind's relation to nature.

ugly non-existant underplanting

In the past, stone fruit is grown for one purpose: what the masses want to buy. That's it. Fruit are picked too early, placed in a dark cool spot to ripen, then put on the shelves. Wrap your minds around this: there are hundreds of varieties of peach, your local supermarket will sell four, maybe five if you are lucky. Wouldn't it be great if we could have one peach tree with six, seven, eight or more varieties of peach on one tree? Wouldn't it be nice if each backyard had at least one multi-graft tree in your backyard?

I love multi-graph espalier fruit trees. An espalier is any tree which has been trained to grow in two dimensions. Espaliers can be pruned to grow first branches low, then grow level by level, to a great height but next to no depth. This mean it it will not shade out other trees, particularly grown on a
fence. As grafted stone fruit

My trees are my art, multigraph espalier trees are a way to express my art. The structure is beautiful, they flower at different times in various shades of white, blue, pink and beige.

For the backyard orchardist (non-commercial) why are American people so hell bent on making their backyard orchards look as ugly as possible? What is so hard about planting small fields of lavender under fruit trees? What is so difficult about planting Dalias, Roses, Azalias or some other beautiful underplanting? The purpose of this blog is to shift common paradigm that space under a fruit tree should be kept clean because many plants grown under a tree will not survive. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many plants benefit the tree for many years to come.

I hope we start considering making our little orchards a little more beautiful this spring and summer.
The first two images are called Eunonymus grandiflorus, or "red wine". Grandiflorus simply means they produce a lot of flowers. The color is dark purple. In some images, this plant turns bright red, just like the burning bush. But I would want more contrasting colors. I love the dark purple but wouldn't want it to turn bright red.

I do not know if it is a spindle tree, I sure wish it was one. I can only imagine the colorful grafts I could make with these trees. They bloom at different times of the year, the effect would be magnificent. I believe it is the Euibyniys Alatus.

Above is a very cute, simple video explaining why growing apples from seed isn't a good idea if you have a small plot of land.

I however, do grow apple and pear from seed, then I try grafting different kinds of apples onto that tree where I can plant it in a public space (secretly of course) Mwaaa haa haaa. Call me, NaomiAppleSeed. I am the real one - not the legend.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373015090018527747.post-18693234635876715292016-10-30T19:58:00.001-07:002016-12-15T21:44:14.554-08:00First Attempt at Cloning Rose Bushes

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Two days ago I took a trip up to a local rose garden. Washington State is famous for being the rhodadendron State. Finding rose gardens is not an easy task. This one in particular was designed in 1922.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Fall is the perfect time to start taking rose cuttings. I searched reletlessly for Hotel Savoy rose. I swear I saw it in that garden. After 30 minutes of looking at one bush after another, alas I could not find it. Although I was disappointed, I didn't leave empty handed. I left with four bundles of cuttings. I made sure there were buds on each cutting, and that the cuttings were at least the size of a number two pencil. I wrapped them in a warm towlet, and stored them in a plastic bag for one day.
<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Later the next day, I cut, and rooted my rose cuttings. Right now I have four medium size pots with about six cutting each. Apparently it takes about 6 weeks for the plants to root and two years before we get a successful plant. Sure it takes a lot of patience, but the payoff is one gets exactly the rose the want....(unless it is Hotel Savoy). In two years the roses will be transplanted to either a larger pot or directly in the garden.
<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">I am a firm believer that flowers must be seen in groups to get the full effect. At least three of the same kind of rose bush should be planted together to appreciate the colors. However, I don't like boarders with only one kind of garden.
<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">I think I will take another trip to the garden and take at least four more plant cuttings. For all the roses I don't plant, I will either sell or give away.
This was a great birthday present from my father. There are three lavender plants under the tree, but today I planted about ten more. The strings are tied down with bricks and large stones, which I covered with soil. Nothing is more unsightly than string tied to bricks structuring branches. I hope the lavender will detract from that. Hopefully the string will only be here a year or so.

Yesterday I planted a Mr. Lincoln Rose fairly close to my house. I wasn't planning on planting a red rose bush in the front yard, but I've been so excited about my Myrtle Gentry Peonies that I started thinking about companion planting.

Savoy Hotel Rose looks like it would be a great addition to my garden. (BTW: the whole red and pink clash only applies to clothing - not gardens). It should be planted with Iris and lavender.

Stella Cherry

I started my first tree grafting project, and have yet to actually label the newly grafted branches. I know, major mistake. So before I forget, I grafted two other types of cherry onto my sweet Van Cherry Tree, the two grafts are Stella Cherry and Sam Sweet Cherry. Sam Sweet Cherry is a good pollinator for Rainer cherry. Stella cherry does not need a pollinator. I know that growing cherry trees as espalier, and expecting fruit, is harder than apple trees. They have to be grown as a fan instead of cordon style. Right now, I have two four cherry branches growing on the cords, this should keep their growth slow. This will give me time to figure out how many other types of cherry I will graft onto the tree.

Cherries are divided into groups: Sweet and Pie (pie are also called tart cherries). My two grafted cherries are SWEET. I think the main

Van Cherries

dark cherry tree is also SWEET. This means, next year I should graft some tart and pie cherries onto the trees. Tart cherries bloom too late in the season to pollinate the others, this is okay because if I graft them, then I can get early and late season cherries.

Sam Cherries

Training cherry branches to grow along a cordon is more difficult than training apples. The branches are less pliable, so it is a good thing I am doing it now instead of later. Cherries grow on new growth wood only, which is why they must be grown as a fan. I am still training the bottom four branches to grow in a straight line on the fence, but later on I will have to allow the branches to grow into more of a fan. The important thing is that grafting different kinds of cherry allows for efficient pollination, and a good crop year after year. So next year, I need to graft two tart cherry branches onto the tree. This way, I will have a total of five different varieties of cherries growing on two trees.

I have two apple trees, one is a Red Delicious Apple and the other is a semi dwarf Gala Apple. The Gala Apple tree has nothing grafted onto it.

Gala Apples

On the Red Delicious apple tree I grafted a golden delicious apple branch. (lets hope it takes) If the graft survives, then next year I will try to grow a Granny Smith Graft on the same branch. Then I will grow all three (yellow) (red) and (green) apples as cordons up the fence. If it works, it will look pretty cool!

In the Raintree Nursery Catalog I read about a man, Sam Van Aken who grafted varieties of plums,peaches, nectarines, cherries and almonds onto one tree. He starts with a hardy root stalk, with a Shiro Japanese plum tree. Plums are grafted on the bottom of the tree, then apricots, while peaches are up on top. I would love to take on a project like that, but I am working only with espalier trees.
